APRA MUSIC AWARDS DETAILS ANNOUNCED,
TOP 30 CONTENDERS FOR APRA SONG OF THE YEAR REVEALED!

The Australasian Performing Right Association (APRA) is proud to reaffirm its commitment to Australian songwriters with its marquee event, the 2012 APRA MUSIC AWARDS, to be held on MONDAY MAY 28TH at the SYDNEY EXHIBITION AND CONVENTION CENTRE in Sydney.

A major event on the music industry calendar, the 2012 APRA MUSIC AWARDS will be the grand finale to Song Summit 2012 and will be held on the closing night of the three-day music industry conference.

The 2012 APRA Music Awards, which will celebrate the achievements of Australian composers and publishers from the previous twelve months, will announce the winners in the categories of: Breakthrough Songwriter of the Year, Most Played Australian Work, Most Played Australian Work Overseas, International Work of the Year, Country Work of the Year, Blues & Roots Work of the Year, Urban Work of the Year, Dance Work of the Year and Rock Work of the Year.

The recipients of the prestigious Songwriter of the Year and the Ted Albert Award for Outstanding Services to Australian Music (as determined by the APRA Board of Writer and Publisher Directors) will also be announced at the gala industry event. And of course, the event will feature the announcement of the coveted peer voted music prize – the APRA Song of the Year.

The first round of voting for the APRA Song of the Year is now complete. Eligibility is determined by:

  • All songs written by an APRA member and released in the preceding calendar year are eligible for consideration.
  • The song must have been written principally (i.e. minimum 50% share) by an APRA writer member that principally resides in Australia.
  • The songs are voted on by APRA members (songwriters) making this a 100% peer-voted music award. However the APRA Song of the Year isn’t a popularity contest or industry competition! This award is all about songwriters recognising the outstanding achievements of their peers and honouring the craft of songwriting.

APRA members have narrowed down the list and APRA can now reveal that the 30 artists listed below are contenders to become APRA Song of the Year.

The song list features a mix of compositions by established songwriters including Kasey Chambers and Shane Nicholson, Hilltop Hoods, Eskimo Joe, Don Walker and The Living End alongside relative newcomers such as Lanie Lane, Kimbra, Emma Louise, San Cisco and Last Dinosaurs. The list also features double entries by songwriter Wally de Backer (aka Gotye) and an entry from gospel outfit Hillsong showcasing the diversity of entries.

APRA|AMCOS CEO Brett Cottle said, “Yet again it is wonderful to see such an eclectic group of songwriters in the shortlist for the 2012 APRA Song of the Year. In what is a genuine peer-voted process, the APRA Song of the Year recognises creative diversity in the Australian music industry, reflecting country, hip-hop, pop and rock songs. From the legendary Don Walker to up-and-comer Lanie Lane and everyone in between, this award continues to offer both peer and public recognition for a broad range of Australian songwriting talent.”

The Top 30 sets up a fascinating contest for the five finalists (to be announced in early May) and the overall winner, which will be announced on Monday May 28th at the 2012 APRA Music Awards. For APRA members the final round of voting will close on FRIDAY APRIL 13TH – be sure to make your vote count in this coveted peer music award.
